It’s a new year, and you know what that means – new ideas, tools and tactics aimed at helping you reduce your shopping cart abandonment rate even further. In a previous post, we highlighted the #1 reason for shopping cart abandonment as issues with shipping. Today, we’re going to take it one step further and provide you with a comprehensive checklist that tackles the shipping challenge, and by extension, abandonment, head-on.

So, what do you need to do to encourage your customers to complete checkout? Read on to learn more.

First, know why people are leaving

For every 100 shoppers, 68 abandon their carts before checkout. And while the overall reason for this trend is shipping complexity, do you really understand what this means? On a micro level, 56% of consumers leave due to unexpected costs, 36% leave in search of a better price via comparison-shopping, 7% are concerned about security, and others leave because of too much red tape. And guess what – these reasons tend to deter retailers from shipping their items internationally as well. Yet, knowing the specific reasons underlying cart abandonment can be used to help modify your fulfillment processes and start seamlessly and successfully closing more sales.

Second, create a foundation for trust

Trust is a major player in getting customers to complete a purchase and should be fostered throughout the buying process. Practically speaking, this means showing customers that their user experience is paramount AND that the personal and payment information they input is secure at all times, by:

  • Including well-known and recognizable trust signals, such as security logos in prominent locations on your website
  • Having a valid SSL certificate
  • Including a progress indicator on all checkout pages, to show shoppers they’re almost there
  • Implementing a transparent, up-front shipping cost policy, to reduce sticker shock
  • Providing a guest checkout option for security-wary shoppers
  • Personalizing your product recommendations and offers, when possible
  • Establishing a customer-centric support and return policy – and sticking to it!

Third, offer multiple ways to pay

Remove as many obstacles to conversion as possible, by enabling shoppers to complete their purchases using a wide variety of payment options. In addition to payment via credit card, enable payment to be made using PayPal and mobile payment apps, such as Bit, PayBox, Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and more. Doing so will eliminate yet another potential reason for shoppers to abandon their carts, and is therefore a simple tactic positioned to make a significant impact on your bottom line.

Fourth, call to action, a lot

The average attention span has taken a startling nose-dive, to just 8 seconds! As such, it is extremely important to repeatedly remind your customers why they are currently on your site, or why they may have visited your site in the past (to buy, of course!). This means implementing highly-targeting marketing content – on your website, via marketing emails, as social media posts, etc., all of which must contain extremely clear calls-to-action (CTAs). Include CTAs on all of your checkout pages, and should shoppers abandon their carts, be sure to swiftly retarget them with CTA-filled emails, so they know you can provide exactly what they want or need.

Fifth, use analytics to identify leaky funnels

No amount of stressing just how critical sales analytics are to the continued success of your business will ever be enough. Google Analytics and other technological programs were designed to help you learn your customers’ behavior, identify shopping habits and patterns and optimize your offering accordingly to prevent abandonment and secure sales.

美国上演“世纪大堵塞”,何时降温? (文/雨果跨境吴白珏)2022年 7月 19日  屋漏偏逢连夜雨,船迟又遇打头风。 今年7月是美国港口有史以来第四个最繁忙的月份,港口拥堵情况持续。 “货主们都不来取货,在此之前从未见过港口堆场被塞得如此满满当当,我们的压力也从未如此大。”佐治亚州萨凡纳港口负责人格里夫·林奇略显无奈的说道[1]。 佐治亚州萨凡纳港口位于美国东部海岸线上,是北美最大的集装箱码头,同时也是美国东海岸第二繁忙的港口。据悉,目前有64%的船只聚集在美东和墨西哥湾沿岸的港口,数以万计的集装箱堆叠在一起,像五颜六色的儿童积木一样堆得高高的,一眼望不到头。而格里夫·林奇作为港口负责人,每天一睁眼,就得开始为这些堆积如山的集装箱忙得焦头烂额。 据乔治亚港务局报告显示,萨凡纳港口5月份总共运输近52万个20英寸标准的集装箱,打破了2021年10月创下的50.43万个的集装箱数量纪录。与去年同期相比,5月份的吞吐量增长了8.5%,创历史单月新高[2]。据报道,美国东海岸(USEC)和墨西哥湾港口等待集装箱船,船舶排队远远超过美国西海岸(USWC)。 拥堵的萨凡纳港只是全美“供应链大混乱”的一个缩影。当下美国地区各港口拥堵情况如“龙卷风”,呈现上升趋势。 美国港口再现“海上大堵车” 另一边,美国西海岸港的日子也不好过。 根据对MarineTraffic和加利福尼亚州排队的船舶跟踪数据,截止7月8日,共有125艘集装箱船在北美港口外等待靠泊,虽比1月份美西拥堵高峰时的150艘等待船舶下降了16%,但比一个月前的92艘船舶增加了36%[3]。 与此同时,7月14日,受加州AB5法案影响,美西三大港口—洛杉矶、长滩和奥克兰的卡车司机相继宣布罢工,雪上加霜的是,美国全国货运铁路劳工谈判陷入僵局,铁路和工会或将面临停业或罢工,进一步加剧了洛杉矶/长滩港的集装箱积压。 “目前美国铁路行业已经饱受人手短缺的困扰”,今年5月,监管铁路行业某独立联邦机构负责人称,“铁路公司在过去六年里削减了4.5万个工作岗位,几乎占其员工总数的30%[4]。”人手的短缺加速了美国主要海港出现拥堵危机,给亚马逊卖家们带来不小的打击。最近有不少亚马逊卖家在疯狂吐槽,有的卖家说6月中下旬自己的货走的一批快船,而且还是正班船,现在已经开船35天了,却迟迟等不到接收的消息;还有亚马逊卖家说自己有一批货已经到了美国港口,却撞上卡车司机罢工,导致进口货物交付放缓。 当前港口集装箱港口拥堵压力短期难解,得益于ZIM与港口签订的运营合作协议,ZL MAX™拥有美国邮政优先权,意味着客户通过ZL MAX™渠道运输货物,其可以在美国港口更快地被处理和卸载;不仅如此,亚马逊卖家选择ZL MAX™ 快船服务,运输稳定又高效,仓到仓仅需20天。 美国港口拥堵的“元凶” 去年下半年以来,美国东西海岸港口的拥堵情况愈发严重。疫情爆发以来,全球海洋集运费用开启了疯狂涨价模式,2019年-2021年,海运市场价格大涨5倍有余。面对强劲的市场需求,20年来美国港口的沉疴痼疾却一直未改善,如今东西海岸港口的堵塞进一步制约了全球集运行业的运力。 影响港口拥堵的原因有很多,包括人力资源短缺、船舶的码头作业效率低、港口码头基础设施不足、港口集疏运体系不完善等。就以洛杉矶和长滩港为例,两个港口占领美国进口运输数量的半壁江山,码头效率被拖累的原因主要在于: 一、后端仓库满,货柜车架周转不开。美国把拖车和车架分开管理,货柜提完后卸货遇到问题不能马上还回去,箱子和车架是一起的,造成车架的短缺。且洛杉矶港堆场利用率达90%,这意味着大部分的卡车和人员都难以有效地移动。 二、免堆存期存放。部分大客户从船公司拿了比较长的免堆存期,导致堆场爆满从而形成恶性循环。截止7月2日数据显示,LA港的码头共有82,640个进口集装箱,集滞期超过九天或更长时间的集装箱高达30206个,这与2月份的低位相比足足上涨了一倍以上。
